The State Government is planning a new project called ‘The Westgate Alternative’ or ‘Westlink’. This is a tunnel starting in the Port Precinct travelling under Seddon and Footscray (with smoke stacks) and emerging around West Footscray Station connecting to Geelong Rd and Sunshine Road intersection. A new freeway will then be built to the Western Ring Road – potentially through residential streets in West Footscray and West Sunshine.
- Tenders for road engineering have already closed.
- The Linking Melbourne Authority is now in charge of the project.
- Major Transport Facilitation Bill now allows the Government to fast track transport plans despite community opposition.
What does this mean for us in the inner West?
- No say on the route.
- No say on which houses stay or go.
- No say on the house prices.
- No say on the sound barriers.
- No say on the landscaping.
- No say on the truck traffic.
- No say on the pollution.
